The 2009 smash-hit film Avatar has climbed back to the top as the highest-grossing film of all time after being rereleased in China.

As reported by Deadline, Avatar managed to usurp 2019's Avengers: Endgame after it recently made $8 million at the Chinese box office.

This brought the film's total worldwide gross up to $2.798 billion, passing the beloved superhero sequel, which has grossed $2.7902 billion.

Marvel Studios has been pushed to second place in its stride, however, as it extended a message of congratulations to the team behind the sci-fi action film for their achievement.

It said: ' Congratulations to Jim Cameron and Jon Landau, and ALL [the] of Na'vi Nation for reclaiming the box office crown! We love you 3000'

The Russo Brothers, who directed Endgame, also congratulated Cameron, saying: 'Passing the gauntlet back to you.'

The official Avatar account and Cameron have since shown their appreciation by retweeting Marvel’s post with a heart emoji.

Avatar follows a paraplegic former soldier named Jake Sully (Played by Sam Worthington) who agrees to enrol in a military operation on the lush jungle-planet Pandora, in order for humanity to learn more about the Na'vi, a humanoid alien species native to the planet.

Jake is wired up to a machine that is able to transfer his consciousness into the body of a Na'vi, regaining his ability to walk and overall giving him a new lease on life.

However, after falling in love with one Na'vi woman named Neytiri (Played by Zoe Saldana), as well as finding out about a brutal colonisation campaign by his fellow humans, Jake agrees to help the natives reclaim their planet.

Although the film's story received mixed reviews and was even labelled as being overly simplistic and dated by some, its special effects and cinematography were largely praised.

The film's use of 3D technology was also acclaimed and was credited with making the film extremely immersive.

Avatar also starred Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Giovanni Ribisi and Michelle Rodriguez in supporting roles.

James Cameron's 1998 film Titanic also holds a spot among the highest grossing films of all times, where it grossed $1,843,201,268 at the time.

Avatar 2 is due to be released in 2022, with a further two sequels also planned for release over the coming years.

Cameron is also well-known for other hugely popular films such as Aliens, True Lies, The Abyss and the first two Terminator films.
