The all-singing, all-dancing, all-fighting updated version of the 1961 classic is coming to a movie theatre near you this December and here's the first trailer starring Ansel Elgort as Tony and Rachel Zegler as Maria, directed by Spielberg. The first preview dropped in dramatic Hollywood style during last night's Oscars.
Based on a Romeo and Juliet-esque doomed love story, the former 1957 Broadway musical tells the story of two loved-up youngsters torn apart by their opposing gangs, the Jets and the Sharks.
The 20th Century offering has been delayed due to the pandemic, but is due out on 10th December 2021.
Spielberg said after wrapping the film: "This has been a journey without precedence: a joyful, stunning, moving, endlessly surprising encounter with the story and score of one of the world's greatest musicals.
"We filmed West Side Story all over New York, Flatbush to Fort Tryon Park. The city lent us its beauty and its energy, and we drew deeply upon its grand multicultural, multifaceted spirit."
Actress Zegler shared on social media last night: "Currently sobbing in bed because life is about to get real tomorrow. Thank you for sharing these past few years of in-between with me."
